PROCLAMATION Reconciliation, Dialogue, and Action Week of the Immigrant May 1-7, 2006 WHEREAS, the City of Santa Barbara recognizes the inherent worth of every person and seeks to promote equity and compassion in human relations; and WHEREAS, the City of Santa Barbara has witnessed, from adults and young people alike, significant support for fairness and justice for immigrants; and WHEREAS, it considers the rights of immigrants to be human rights, and aspires to elevate, through respect and civil law, all that is conferred by government documentation and direction; and WHEREAS, the City of Santa Barbara recognizes that foreign-born immigrants have a legal and moral imperative to live in our community free from intimidation or fear; and WHEREAS, the City of Santa Barbara will encourage dialogue to address facts and concerns about immigration laws at all levels of government; and WHEREAS, immigrants play a vital, yet often overlooked, role in our economy and deserve to be treated with dignity while enjoying the rich diversity of our City through civic participation, NOW, THEREFORE, I, MARTY BLUM, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Santa Barbara, do hereby proclaim May 1 - 7, 2006 as the WEEK OF THE IMMIGRANT - RECONCILIATION, DIALOGUE, AND ACTION and encourage all men, women, and children to join in recognizing the many contributions of immigrants who live and work in our community. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Official Seal of the City of Santa Barbara, California, to be affixed this 18th day of April, 2006. _______________________________ MARTY BLUM, MAYOR
